The art and science of Maya:

Subhas Mitra  :  16 Nov 2022

One might ask if this book is addressing only the Politico-Religious challenges of contemporary Hindu society where a purely philosophical term MAYA fits in it. Well, Hindus are nothing without Hinduism and Maya is the finest inseparable tool for the analytical understanding of Hinduism and Hindu psych.

To learn higher knowledge (Vedanta) one has to first unlearn all preconceptions and prejudices. One must be prepared to reject faith and accept reason as the sole criteria for all judgments. Many orthodox minds will find this difficult and disturbing.

I started finding shortcomings in my authors but I knew I am not competent in fault finding thus I attempted to uneducated myself and then attempted to understand the same subject in my way and realized without Sanskrit one cannot absorb Hinduism. Maya is one such word that is impregnated with multiple complicated theories to unravel mysteries. One who understands Maya can understand Hinduism better.

Recently I wrote on atheism and my critics have given me an insight as to how can a person deny the undeniable.  The first such person that came to my mind is Gautam Buddha. He denied God as well as Atma (individual soul) and Paramatma (the supreme soul). He denied the Vedas but he did contradict it in his ORDER on many occasions (meaning He did take Veda seriously on some issues). He was searching/teaching NOTHINGNESS, Sunyata, or Nirvana.

He even called those who did not believe in his teaching the “outer path-farers” (Tirthika  तीर्थिका). Perhaps these “Tirthika” became “Gentile” after 600 years and “Kafir” after another 600 years.

Let’s look at VEDAS for SUNYATA, Nothingness or absence:

‘Nothing’ can come out of “nothing”, meaning you need ‘something’ to create or produce ‘something’.  Abrahamic God created everything out of ‘nothing’ but Hinduism searched for “THAT”, out of which everything has come to its existence and reached up to HIRANYAGARBHA  हिरण्यगर्भः the cosmic egg. (You may or may not call the black hole).

No truth is total truth until you believe in it. Now the Sunyata शुन्यता is not emptiness or void or ether or nothingness but it could be the absence (state of being away) of something. It also means SUNYA is temporarily absent but there might have been something before and there may be something later.  Absence also means an unusual perception of sense like the absence of normality = abnormal.   What is THAT thing or SENSE?

In my understanding, MAYA माया is the nearest Sunyata.  Maya is AVIDYA अविद्या or ignorance. Maya in itself is explicit where मा / Ma stands for non-existence and या/Ya for reality i.e. non-existent but (momentarily) real.

Shankaracharya told us in Vedanta about Anisa अनिशा (impotence/ ignorance) and Nisa निशा (a process of ignoring the ignorance and discovering and understand the reality that exists but we may or may not perceive).  He also used the simple language of TWO Birds (that never part with each other) on the tree (in the human body), One enjoys through the senses ( Jivatma)  the other only observes ( Paramatma).

The Kena Upanishad (Kenopanishad) declares:

यद्वाचानभ्युदितं येन वागभ्युद्यते।

तदेव ब्रह्म त्वं विद्धि नेदं यदिदमुपासते।।

‘That’ which is unexpressed by the word, that by which the word is expressed, know ‘That’ to be the Brahman and not this which men follow after here (Rituals).

Our वाङ (speech), मनः (mind), चक्षुस् (eyes), श्रोत्रं (ears) प्राणः (vital breath)] fails to mean or know or understand the Supreme Truth (Brahman).  Brahman is Consciousness. You cannot know Consciousness because Consciousness is what enables you to know exactly the way our Eyes see but we cannot see eyes.

It became clear that the inherent wisdom of humans is still indefinable, and immeasurable. Without Atheism, Theism is inaccessible. Without understanding Maya, atheism is destruction.  Are we getting a smell of the source of Artificial Intelligence? Why does Microsoft have a Sanskrit desk? Why Sanskrit is being adopted by NASA?

Poisonous Maya:

 (My concept)

This Maya is prevalent in the anti-Hindu world. Ever since Hindu scriptures and epics are available in various languages and the most ignorant are getting to know them through Social Media their interpretations are CREATING this “Poisonous Maya”. No one tells them that Hinduism is symbolic and that Vedic deities are mostly personifications of various sources of energy.

The most common abuse is – Hindu God Brahma is incest. I once replied to one such person that, Yes incest is permitted but only for a man having FOUR heads. Do you have or have seen one?

No one understands that SARASWATI is the daughter of Brahma by one Rishi, daughter of Shiva by another, she is a River, she is a duck that never gets wet in water and she is grey matter in our brain. While in Abrahamic mythology with is supposed to be historical persons with miraculous power and their SARAH (Saraswati) is:

In the biblical narrative, Sarah is the wife of Abraham. In two places in the narrative, he says Sarah is his sister (Genesis 12:10 through 13:1, in the encounter with Pharaoh, and Genesis 20, in the encounter with Abimelech). Knowing Sarah to be a great beauty and fearing that the Pharaoh would kill Abraham to be with Sarah, Abraham asks Sarah to tell the Pharaoh that she is his sister (Genesis 17).

Father-daughter incest appears in the Bible in the book of Genesis 19

However, It is here I understand Hinduism is meant for people of Vigyan विज्ञानं (analytical inquisitiveness) and not Agyan अज्ञान (those lives on basic instincts driven by senses alone) but since all are to be taken along / accommodated, some humbugs (apparently less important rituals) and dogmas (stories of ‘Dristi’ and ‘Shriti’ kabya of fictional nature) have been needed. They may not have intellectual needs but have psychological effects to hold all things together and thus it is DHARMA.

Understanding Maya   माया की महत्व :

1. मां दुष्कृतिनो मूढा: प्रपद्यन्ते नराधमा: |

      माययापहृतज्ञाना आसुरं भावमाश्रिता:

Bhagwat Gita Ch : 7/ 15

Analyze māyayāpahṛita-jñānā, you get māyayā— is material energy of existence; apahṛita jñānāḥ—those with deluded intellect. But we Hindus think “Maya” is a delusion or illusion like मायाजाल.

2. Vedanta philosophy refers to the term “Maya” as the cosmic illusion on account of which the one appears as many, the Absolute as the Relative.  In spirituality, Maya is the Advaita (Nondualist) Vedanta. Maya originally denoted the magic power with which a god can make human beings believe in what turns out to be an illusion. According to Shankaracharya, Maya is the mistaken tendency to regard appearance as reality

3. Sat Guru tells us Maya is like Mirage. A mirage is not for nothingness or Sunya –some gaseous substances look like water. Like Mirage, Maya is not nothingness.

Maya in Pre-Abrahamic civilizations:

1. Greek had a goddess of Illusion named “MEDEA”, the mother of the legendary Hermes by Zeus, and also same meaning in Eastern Pantheism.

2. Roman too had Maya with the same meaning and name.

3. In Hebrew, Spanish, and Arabic, Maya means “water” and they name their girls Maya. (Arabs call Moya also)

4. In Avastan Persian Maya means Graciousness or Gracious nature.

5. Maya in Mayan civilization too is/was a mother figure for creation.

6. Maya in Africa, Australia, and far eastern Asia is of Sanskrit origin.

What is Maya for scientists?

Science is searching for a “belief”, The Belief in Science Scale (BISS) is a one-dimensional measure that assesses the degree to which science is valued as a source of superior knowledge.

BISS or belief has trigger points like the apple for gravity or a walking stick for the magnet. Maya is one such trigger.

Satyen Bose’s Boson or God Particle, Moni Bhowmik’s CODE name God became the trigger for others. When Nicola Tesla came in contact with Vedanta, his concept of Maya might have not been “Nothingness” but “something” that prevails but cannot be perceived or felt/detected by normal senses. I see his “wireless world system” turning earth into one gigantic Dynamo or his satellite phone in 1926 in that light.

Scientists found Maya particles. (This portion is copied from the source- I do not understand it well)

What are particles in Maya? It is nParticles, a particle generation system that uses Maya® Nucleus. What is a rigid body in Maya?

A rigid body in Maya is a polygonal or NURBS surface converted to an unyielding shape. … To animate rigid body motion, you use fields, keys, expressions, rigid body constraints, or collisions with particles. Maya has two kinds of rigid bodies—active and passive.

Maya Dynamics is a branch of physics that describes how objects move. … You specify the actions you want the object to take, then let the software figure out how to animate the object. Dynamic animation lets you create realistic motion that’s hard to achieve with traditional keyframe animation.

Microsoft®   System Requirements for Autodesk Maya 2020. Graphics cards: Maya Certified Hardware. I think Dynamic animation lets you create realistic motion that’s hard to achieve with traditional keyframe animation.  The Maya Dynamics guide, which provides information about creating dynamic simulations in Maya, is available at http://www.autodesk.com/maya-docs-archiv

Maya in Quantum physics: (copied)

Buddhist thought was based on the negative concepts of anātmavāda अनात्मबाद denying the existence of soul … Politiques for his work in the philosophy of quantum mechanics. … displayed as virtual reality, close to the concept of Māyā.  Michio Kaku and several other currently active physicists and science writers said so.

Kaku writes: In my view, 6000 years ago the peoples of India were far more advanced than NASA and then somehow mysteriously forgot.

Even the end of the Kali Yuga is disputed, although India does accept 3102 BCE as the … The Sanskrit word VEDA means knowledge wisdom. … In ‘Vedic String Theory’ author M. Anant Bhakta says that in his work “.

Michio Kaku writes a similar idea in his Paramarthasara परमार्थसार, or Essence of the Exact Reality: “Maya tattva … मायातत्व.

Dr. Balram Singh has written – How to approach SUNYATA as the Quantum reality through biological Consciousness. (I’ve not read it).

Maya in Christian Heresy:

Fra Angelico‘s (1395-1455) painting the Annunciation is Maya for many.   It is a painting of that key moment in the Christian story when the angel Gabriel appears to Mary and announces that she will give birth to a son by miraculous means.

Annunciatio : Catholic Maya by Fra Angelico

Conclusion:

Vedanta unveils that, Divine Maya is awesome. Vedic seers with their super mind power used to travel through this divine Maya, to uncover the secret of our Creator, how he plays with the universe through a relentless activity of creation and destruction, but with the same tender of love and perfection.

Isn’t it Maya?
